A word about Facebook quizzes

A reminder to my friends, OMG quizzes ended up having a virus attached to them, so if you have done those make sure your antivirus on your computer or phone is up to date. I have been looking and I cannot find any information on the WOW quizzes, which leads me to believe it's the same thing since the icon is exactly the same. DO NOT do quizzes that ask for access to your Facebook information, please. If you have, please be sure to deauthorize them immediately https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-revoke-facebook-app-permissions/ Pick up some antivirus!  Avast, AVG, Sophos and BitDefender are all great choices that you can get for free. And here is a longer article about this very subject! https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/tech-columnist-warns-against-taking-social-media-quizzes-for-fun-1.5442282 We at Tech Witch Detroit are taking a well needed break until Tuesday.  So unfortunately if you need something this weekend, I won't be about to help, but I'll be glad to get...

Cleaning your PC, but not like that!

We all know that having good antivirus and antimalware is a great way to keep your computer in tip-top shape, but what about the physical tower or case for laptops?

Is your phone or laptop fully charged? Maybe it shouldn't be

I have this routine when I get home from being out, I immediately throw my phone on my charger and I do the same anytime I retire for the evening. The thing is, we shouldn't be doing it that way!   Here are some facts - Batteries degrade in high temperatures - When charging your Lithium-Ion battery, you may notice it gets much hotter above 70% charge. Many experts agree, when charging your phone or other lithium-ion powered device, you should keep the charge between 30-70%, any less than that and the battery is working harder than it really should, any more than that and the battery gets hot, causing the battery to degrade.  The way that these batteries work is based on a mean voltage, which is the amount of voltage the battery has going through it at any given time.  The least load your battery can have is between 30% charged and 80% charged.  So, it just makes sense to charge your battery to 80% then allow it to drain to 30% before putting it back on the...

The Number 1 app you need on your device RIGHT NOW!

Do you have AntiVirus?  Yes, but do you have it on your phone?  What about your laptop, or Chromebook? If you don't, this was the sign you were looking for, pull that trigger! The convenience of having a device that can go online at any point, no waiting also means that your device is accessible, with no waiting, to malicious software.  This means as you are looking at Facebook right now, the device you are using could potentially already have a virus

How to Set Up Google Voice!

Image
Google Voice was started in 2009 after Google purchased the service Grand Central. I was an early adopter of the platform because I like being able to respond to texts using a computer, and I wasn't too concerned about the other benefits this platform has to offer.  However, as more and more of the benefits rolled out, I became quite dependent on them! We know those feels, bro. Today I'll go over how to use Google Voice! The first thing you need to determine is if you want to sign up for a new number with Google, or if you want to use your existing telephone number.  I recommend signing up for a new telephone number, as having an additional phone line can be incredibly useful in some aspects.  For example, if you tend to go between different providers frequently, sometimes things can get messed up when you are moving that number between providers.   We saw this in the cable industry pretty frequently; someone signs up for a new phone service and the person who h...

How to prove your internet is acting up to your ISP

Image
We've all had something like this, you're tooling along on the internet then, boom, you start getting pictures that won't load. Next, you notice this circle that just keeps circling and you think "Jeez, not this again!" Due to the nature of ISPs and the ongoing Pandemic, occasional slowdowns on your network are completely understandable.  Try to extend a little grace, a lot of folks are still working from home and using resources that would usually be used somewhere OTHER than your neighborhood.

Networking, but not the kind with parties and people.

Earlier this week, we talked about the origins of the Internet, where it came from and the steps it took to get there.  Today, I thought we'd expand on it a bit. Today's Tech Witch Tip: All about networks!
