How to Set Up Google Voice!

Image
Google Voice was started in 2009 after Google purchased the service Grand Central. I was an early adopter of the platform because I like being able to respond to texts using a computer, and I wasn't too concerned about the other benefits this platform has to offer.  However, as more and more of the benefits rolled out, I became quite dependent on them! We know those feels, bro. Today I'll go over how to use Google Voice! The first thing you need to determine is if you want to sign up for a new number with Google, or if you want to use your existing telephone number.  I recommend signing up for a new telephone number, as having an additional phone line can be incredibly useful in some aspects.  For example, if you tend to go between different providers frequently, sometimes things can get messed up when you are moving that number between providers.   We saw this in the cable industry pretty frequently; someone signs up for a new phone service and the person who h...

How to prove your internet is acting up to your ISP

Image
We've all had something like this, you're tooling along on the internet then, boom, you start getting pictures that won't load. Next, you notice this circle that just keeps circling and you think "Jeez, not this again!" Due to the nature of ISPs and the ongoing Pandemic, occasional slowdowns on your network are completely understandable.  Try to extend a little grace, a lot of folks are still working from home and using resources that would usually be used somewhere OTHER than your neighborhood.

Networking, but not the kind with parties and people.

Earlier this week, we talked about the origins of the Internet, where it came from and the steps it took to get there.  Today, I thought we'd expand on it a bit. Today's Tech Witch Tip: All about networks!

One of the last attainable frontiers, YouTube.

On Yesterday's Tech Witch Tips, we talked about how the Internet came to be.  I also talked a little bit about how that looked for me, as a young person growing up at the time the Internet became a public entity. There were some unique things that happened in the late 1990s and early 2000s that were specific to the growth of the Internet.  We may go back and revisit that period of time here, but today we're going to talk about the last frontier, YouTube. I chose this today because in a lot of ways it's like the original Internet days.  Not all brands have a YouTube Channel and even having one, a lot more still do not know what the hell to use it for.  So this tip will be in 2 parts.   1. What is YouTube and how others are using it to build their branding and increase their influence.   2. How to start when all you have is a cell phone and a dream.

The Tech Witch Explains the beginnings of the Internet.

People can now understand why other people say I may not be the most stable human in the world.   Dee, really you are going to sit here and explain how the internet works when it's just this huge collection of millions of people's thoughts, feelings, concepts, and ideas? Yes.  Because procedurally it's a different thing entirely. The Internet is at its base level, a network of networks.

Why Do Technicians always tell us to reboot our stuff?

Chrome says my password has been compromised, what should I do?

Image
I'm going to try to do tips daily, or at least semi-regularly because this way you don't have to go on a mad dash to find out what to do about this kind of issue. Ok so here's a scenario.  You are browsing along on the internet, doing your thing and suddenly, as you are asked to log into a particular website, Google Chrome or Firefox tells you that "This Website has had some usernames and passwords compromised."  What do you do? First, verify that the message is actually coming from your browser.  An actual message from the browser will look like this:  On your phone, it looks somewhat similar: I pulled these images from another article by the Sun, just because I couldn't think of a site offhand that had an issue.  However, I have seen this warning in person, so it's an actual, real, verifiable thing. A word about trusting everything you read on the internet, don't!  If you are using a different browser than Chrome and you see a pop-up similar to this...
